The Darjeeling Tea Industry (DTA) has made an urgent appeal to the Union Commerce Ministry, requesting that all tea imported from Nepal undergo thorough quality assessments according to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines.
In a letter addressed to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, DTA's principal advisor, Sandeep Mukherjee, expressed concerns over the influx of inexpensive, low-quality tea from Nepal that threatens the local industry, particularly affecting the renowned Darjeeling tea sector.
The DTA urged the adoption of necessary measures to ensure that all imported tea complies with FSSAI standards, safeguarding the Indian tea market and ensuring consumers receive safe and healthy products.
