Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a significant order from ITER, the France-based intergovernmental organization behind the world's largest nuclear fusion project. Announced in an exchange filing, L&T will handle the deployment of advanced technologies for assembling ports and complex components with the Vacuum Vessel at ITER's Cadarache facility in Southern France.
The contract highlights L&T's expertise in advanced manufacturing, crucial for replicating the Sun's nuclear fusion process to create large-scale, carbon-free energy. Additionally, L&T has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ITER to collaborate on state-of-the-art technology and hardware development for the project's fusion systems, central to controlling plasma for fusion energy production.
In the Tokamak pit, a pivotal area within the facility, L&T's role encompasses management of complex construction and assembly tasks, leveraging decades of engineering experience. This collaboration, noted by ITER's Director General Pietro Barabaschi, reinforces India's active contribution. Building on past successes like the early delivery of the Cryostat, L&T's collaboration aims to advance nuclear fusion as a viable large-scale energy source.
