The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a substantial loan of USD 241.3 million aimed at augmenting the power distribution network in West Bengal. Announced on Tuesday, this funding seeks to elevate residents' standards of living by providing consistent, high-quality, and sustainable electricity supply.

Roka Sanda, ADB's Principal Energy Specialist, highlighted the program's alignment with the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme instituted by the government. This initiative is central to improving the operational efficacy of power distribution firms, as reliable and sustainable electricity is pivotal for West Bengal's advancement.

The West Bengal Distribution System Strengthening Program will impact 8.96 million consumers across seven districts in the state. The plan includes upgrading low-tension overhead lines to modern aerial bundled cables and separating electricity feeders for agricultural and non-agricultural uses. An advanced information and operation management system will be developed for monitoring power supply quality, performance, and corporate financial management.

ADB's intervention is set to boost the operational efficiency of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, fostering asset and financial management skills, promoting the use of renewable energy, and advocating for tariff rationalization along with gender equity and social inclusion.

Furthermore, ADB is investing in enhancing safety standards, supplying essential safety equipment, and raising electrical safety awareness in communities. Technical and engineering staff in districts will receive behavioral safety training.

Committed to the broader goal of creating a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, ADB continues its mission to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, ADB is owned by 69 members, with 49 from the Asian region.
