A tragic accident on the Palakkad-Kozhikode National Highway in Kerala has claimed the lives of five people, according to local police reports. The incident unfolded around 11 pm on Tuesday near Ayyappankavu, when a car traveling from Palakkad collided head-on with a lorry coming from the opposite direction.
The intensity of the crash left the car trapped under the lorry, resulting in the immediate death of three passengers. The remaining two were rushed to Palakkad District Hospital but succumbed to their injuries during treatment. Among the deceased were K K Vijesh, an auto-rickshaw driver, Ramesh, Vishnu, and Muhammad Afsal, with one victim yet to be identified.
Authorities suspect heavy rain may have contributed to the car losing control before the collision. The impact severely wrecked the vehicle, forcing rescue teams to cut open the car to retrieve the passengers. The lorry driver sustained minor injuries. In response to the accident, political parties have temporarily halted their campaigns for the upcoming Palakkad Assembly by-election.
