A locomotive collided with the tail of a Cairo-bound passenger train in southern Egypt, authorities reported, leading to multiple injuries. The Saturday incident marks the second train crash within a month for the North African nation.
The crash occurred in Minya province, about 270 kilometers south of Cairo. As stated by the railway authority, two carriages toppled into a nearby watercourse. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Local media footage displayed the carriages partially submerged, as the Health Ministry confirmed at least 20 individuals were transported to hospitals. Train-related accidents are frequent in Egypt, largely due to mismanagement of its outdated railway infrastructure. Efforts are underway for improvements, but challenges persist.
