India's consumer technology market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with urban areas leading the charge. A recent GfK report highlighted that urban India purchased TVs and large appliances worth over Rs 60,000 crore in the first half of 2024 through offline channels. In comparison, rural India accounted for sales of Rs 3,000 crore in the same period.
The report identifies India as the fastest-growing market for consumer tech and durables, supported by a strong Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) and declining inflation rates. It predicts that by 2030, India's middle class will outspend the upper class, with significant contributions from the growth in Asia.
Rural India, though smaller in purchase value, offers substantial growth potential due to increasing infrastructure, consumer awareness, and aspirations. An NIQ-GfK study revealed a proliferation of retail networks, with over 20 outlets per 100 villages selling televisions and refrigerators, illustrating the expanding footprint of consumer tech and durable goods in rural areas.
