In 2008, a simple SMS from then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to Ratan Tata catalyzed a significant industrial shift. The Tata Group Chairman was announcing the relocation of the Tata Nano project from West Bengal due to protests spearheaded by Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee. Modi's message of 'welcome' was pivotal.

Tata's decision to move the plant was announced on October 3, 2008, with Gujarat chosen to host the project just days later. Modi's strategy showcased Gujarat's appeal, ensuring the project remained within India despite global interest. The Tata Nano plant at Sanand, built with a Rs 2,000 crore investment, was inaugurated two years later, highlighting the state's efficient cooperation.

The rollout of the first Nano car in June 2010 was marked by Ratan Tata's praise for Modi's government, citing their role in creating a harmonious and supportive environment. Despite the project's initial success, Tata discontinued Nano production in 2018, closing a notable chapter in India's industrial history.
