Despite challenges in implementation, it's set to boost the automotive industry. However, limited scrappage facilities, incentives, and awareness are hurdles to achieving its full potential.

ICRA has identified approximately 1.1 million medium and heavy commercial vehicles aged over 15 years, poised for scrappage under India's Vehicle Scrappage Policy, potentially boosting vehicle sales through replacement demand.
Phase two of the policy, effective June 1, 2023, mandates scrappage based on vehicle fitness rather than age, adding a voluntary element to the initiative aiming to modernize India's outdated vehicle fleet.
Despite significant replacement demand potential, implementation hurdles such as limited scrapping facilities and inadequate incentives have slowed progress, with the policy offering a promising yet challenging path for environmental and industry benefits.
