On Friday morning, Italian rail services faced significant disruptions after a tragic accident north of Bologna resulted in the death of a maintenance worker, according to rail track group Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI).
This incident comes in the wake of a similar tragedy last year near Turin, and follows major delays caused by a technical failure that affected Rome's main stations earlier this week. The accident interrupted rail connections between Bologna and Venice in the early hours.
RFI, a part of the state-owned railway operator Ferrovie dello Stato, reported that normal operations began resuming by 8 am. However, high-speed trains experienced delays of up to 80 minutes, and 14 local trains were canceled. The organization is cooperating with ongoing investigations.
