ADB Boosts Himachal Pradesh Tourism with $162 Million Loan
The Asian Development Bank has approved a $162 million loan to enhance tourism in Himachal Pradesh, India, by upgrading heritage sites, improving infrastructure, and promoting cultural centers. The initiative is expected to boost employment and foster economic growth for local communities.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a substantial $162 million loan aimed at bolstering sustainable and inclusive tourism in Himachal Pradesh, India. This ambitious project seeks to amplify the state's tourism allure by refining heritage locations, advancing cultural hubs, and modernizing tourism infrastructure.
According to Vivek Vishal, ADB's Senior Project Officer, the bank is dedicated to aiding Himachal Pradesh in its mission to fortify its tourism sector and stimulate economic prosperity. He emphasized that the project will enrich the state's tourism offerings by rejuvenating cultural sites, introducing new amenities, and fortifying tourism management.
The initiative will spotlight the enhancement of heritage and cultural hubs in Mandi and Hamirpur, restoration of the historic Naggar Castle in Kullu, and beautification of public areas. Moreover, plans include the construction of a convention center in Kangra and the upgrade of wayside facilities across Kullu, Hamirpur, and Kangra.
Focused on sustainability, the project will incorporate green solutions such as solar illumination and electric vehicles, accommodating elderly visitors, women, children, and individuals with disabilities. Beyond infrastructure, it will introduce wellness and recreation centers, an adventure sports hub, a water park complex, and biking trails, potentially creating jobs for locals and revitalizing the regional economy.
Additionally, ADB will fortify the capacity of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board by aiding in crafting a comprehensive tourism strategy and marketing approach. Support will also extend to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises through targeted training and skills development, empowering locals to provide superior tourism services.
The initiative further aims to enhance district-level tourism governance, assisting them in devising strategic destination plans and optimally managing visitor sites.
