KLM has unveiled a series of cost-cutting measures aimed at strengthening its financial position as it recovers from the pandemic's impact on global aviation. The airline, like many others, faces rising costs and staff shortages, announced CEO Marjan Rintel on Thursday.

In 2020, KLM, part of the Air France-KLM group, faced significant losses—€7.1 billion—as COVID-19 ground air travel to a halt, slashing passenger numbers by 67%. The current strategic adjustments are projected to enhance operating results by €450 million ($497 million), but specifics about potential job reductions were not disclosed.

Despite the 'painful' nature of these changes, adjustments are necessary, according to Rintel. CFO Bas Brouns highlighted that some planned investments might be postponed as KLM looks to acquire quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft. Efforts will also target productivity and addressing pilot shortages while exploring outsourcing as a viable option.
