Taiwan Mobilizes 40,000 Troops as Typhoon Krathon Looms

Taiwan mobilized nearly 40,000 troops on Tuesday to bolster rescue efforts as the powerful Typhoon Krathon approached its populous southwest coast. The coast guard raced to locate 19 sailors who abandoned ship. Taiwan often faces typhoons, but this one threatens the densely populated western plain.

Krathon is forecast to hit the major port city of Kaohsiung on Wednesday morning, then traverse central Taiwan heading northeast, eventually reaching the East China Sea, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). Kaohsiung, home to around 2.7 million people, declared a holiday and advised residents to stay indoors as the U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center labeled Krathon a super typhoon.

Li Meng-hsiang, a CWA forecaster, warned of 150 kph (93 mph) gusts for the southwest. Concerns include storm surges and potential flooding due to heavy rains. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai compared the storm's strength to 1977's Typhoon Thelma and urged residents to avoid coastal and mountainous areas.
