The government has imposed mandatory quality norms for screws to control the import of sub-standard goods, revitalize domestic manufacturing, and ensure consumer safety.

Under the new order, screws cannot be produced, sold, traded, imported, or stocked without the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark.

Violations can lead to up to two years of imprisonment or fines starting at Rs 2 lakh for the first offence, with harsher penalties for repeated violations.
