Manufacturing Sector Booms: Employment Rises 7.5% in 2022-23
The manufacturing sector saw a significant 7.5% rise in employment, reaching 1.85 crore in 2022-23, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Major growth drivers included basic metals and petroleum industries. Maharashtra led in Gross Value Added, while Tamil Nadu had the highest employment. Key economic metrics like GVA and output also showed substantial gains.
The manufacturing sector experienced a notable uptick in job numbers, rising by 7.5% to 1.85 crore in 2022-23 from 1.72 crore the previous year, according to the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
The number of people employed in the sector in 2022-23 surpassed pre-pandemic levels by over 22.14 lakh, the MoSPI report revealed. Simultaneously, average emolument per person also saw a 6.3% increase compared to the previous year.
The survey highlighted growth across various economic parameters, including invested capital, input, output, GVA, employment, and wages, even exceeding pre-pandemic levels. Key sectors like basic metals, refined petroleum products, and motor vehicles drove this growth. Maharashtra topped in Gross Value Added, while Tamil Nadu led in employment numbers.
