Chinese Tourists Choose Cheaper Destinations Amid Economic Slowdown

Chinese tourists are expected to take longer trips but opt for cheaper destinations during the Golden Week holiday due to economic slowdown and low consumer confidence. A slight rise in domestic travel and lower airfares are anticipated, with spending likely remaining flat compared to last year.

Chinese tourists are gearing up for longer trips during the Golden Week holiday starting Tuesday, though this might not equate to increased spending, according to travel experts.

With the economy slowing and consumer confidence low, many will choose budget-friendly domestic or short-haul overseas destinations, benefiting from cheaper airfares. This year's National Day break is expected to see only a 0.7% increase in trips managed by the transport sector compared to last year, says government data.

'It would be a good result if tourism spending remains flat with last year,' remarked Liu Simin from the China Society for Futures Studies. A Beijing office worker, Wang Xin, shared she'd be driving with her family to Yangzhou to cut costs. Domestic and international airfare prices have dropped significantly, making longer and slightly upgraded stays more appealing. Some airlines have reduced or stopped flights to China due to demand and price competition, though exceptions like Korean Air are seeing a regional travel boost.
