In Thane district, Maharashtra, insurance companies have entered a competitive race to speed up settlements in accident cases, an official from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) revealed on Sunday.

The new trend has brought relief to the families of victims and lightened the burden on the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), the official noted.

Ishwar Suryavanshi, secretary of the DLSA, described this competition as a positive shift that benefits both claimants and insurers, while also reducing court backlogs. As a result, other legal matters can be managed more efficiently.

Recently, record settlements were made, including a claim of Rs 4.50 crore and another for Rs 1.33 crore, surpassing the previous record of Rs 2.80 crore set during the last Lokadalat.

A total of 217 MACT claims, amounting to over Rs 26.80 crore, were settled in the district during the Lok Adalat on Saturday.

Suryavanshi praised the efforts of the insurance companies and their legal teams and expressed optimism that this healthy competition would lead to further settlements.
