The International Labour Organization (ILO) has introduced a new Observatory on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Work in the Digital Economy to address the growing impact of AI on global workplaces. The online resource is set to become the leading international hub for knowledge on how AI and the digital economy affect employment.
The Observatory focuses on four key areas:
The impact of AI on employment and productivity
Algorithmic management and the use of tracked data to supervise work
Digital labour platforms and their growing presence in the workforce
Handling of workers' personal data by employers
ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo emphasized that the ILO aims to help governments, workers, and employers manage the AI-driven transformation of workplaces to ensure AI becomes a positive force. Launched on 25 September at a high-level event, the Observatory brings together global expertise and research to guide policymakers in adapting to this new era of work.
