India's solar PV module manufacturing capacity has skyrocketed from 2.3 GW to 67 GW in the past decade, driven by the Make In India initiative, according to the Ministry of Renewable Energy. Current projects amounting to 48 GW are in various stages of implementation under the solar PLI scheme.
On social media platform X, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi highlighted the renewable energy sector's significant contributions to the #10YearsOfMakeInIndia campaign. 'From PLI to VGF, we are extending all possible support to our domestic industries,' Joshi stated, emphasizing government's commitment to turning India into a major global player in clean energy solutions.
Numerous measures have been introduced to support domestic manufacturing, covering solar PV modules, cells, and upstream components like ingots, wafers, and polysilicon, as well as wind turbines, electrolysers for green hydrogen, and battery energy storage systems.
Solar PV manufacturing remains central to the Government's efforts to make India self-reliant and a global leader in the field. This aspiration is backed by a significant Rs. 24,000 crores outlay for the High-Efficiency Solar PV Modules PLI Scheme and additional policy measures, such as basic customs duties and domestic content requirements.
Since the inception of the Make In India initiative in 2014, India's solar PV manufacturing capacity has surged from 2.3 GW to 67 GW, a growth complemented by the ability to meet domestic demand and boost exports. The recent increase from 8 GW in 2021 to 67 GW today showcases remarkable progress.
Further, the 48 GW of projects under the solar PLI scheme will attract approximately Rs. 1.1 lakh crores in investments and generate around 45,000 direct employment opportunities, the ministry stated.
