Union Minister of Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya has reached out to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, urging state intervention in the ongoing workers' strike at the Sriperumbudur plant of Samsung Electronics. Sources reveal that Mandaviya emphasized the need for an early and amicable resolution to maintain a positive manufacturing sector ecosystem.
According to insiders, the Union Minister assured his full support from the central ministry to aid in resolving the matter efficiently. The strike, which began on September 9, involves over 1,000 Samsung workers demanding key changes, including a wage hike, union recognition, and an eight-hour workday.
On Tuesday, Samsung stated that it offers wages 1.8 times higher than the regional average for manufacturing workers. "The welfare of our workers is our top priority, and we provide competitive salaries along with overtime pay and allowances. We are committed to engaging with our workers to address their grievances promptly," the company said in a statement.
The ongoing strike has witnessed two rounds of failed talks with the state labour department and minister. Workers have been pressing for 20 demands, encompassing wage adjustments and improved work conditions, indicating a protracted conflict if not resolved soon.
