A tragic series of accidents on a Southern California interstate resulted in the death of a passenger after a horse smashed through a car windshield, authorities said.
The incident began around 2 a.m. Sunday when a Toyota Tacoma towing a horse trailer veered into a guardrail on Interstate 15 near Norco, as reported by the California Highway Patrol. The impact caused the trailer to split open, unleashing the horse onto the freeway. Subsequently, a semitractor-trailer collided with the horse trailer.
Attempting to cross the freeway, the horse was initially clipped by a black Honda Accord and later hit by a gray Honda Accord. The latter strike propelled the horse through the car's windshield, killing a 25-year-old male passenger. The driver, aged 27, sustained minor injuries. The horse also died in the collisions. No arrests have been made, and the cause of the initial Toyota collision remains under investigation.
