Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been elected as Sri Lanka's new president, bringing a Marxist-leaning perspective to the role as the nation seeks recovery from severe financial tumult. His presidency will dictate the trajectory for economic reforms in the debt-burdened country.

The new president faces significant hurdles. Sri Lanka's economy, which saw a dire foreign exchange reserve crisis in 2022, has tentatively started to recover but remains fragile. Inflation has dropped dramatically from a high of 70% to 0.5%, and the economy is expected to grow in 2024. However, Dissanayake must assure markets, attract investment, and alleviate widespread poverty.

A four-year, $2.9 billion IMF bailout, secured in March 2023, has been a bedrock in stabilizing the economy. It has aided in boosting reserves, stabilizing the currency, and controlling inflation. Debt restructuring, particularly $10 billion in bilateral debt and $12.5 billion in international bonds, remains critical for meeting fiscal targets. Dissanayake aims to adjust the IMF program to ease taxation, although these adjustments could complicate fiscal goals. In addition, with minimal parliamentary support, passing policies may prove difficult.
