A new survey found that the majority of prospective Indian car buyers are prepared to switch to new energy vehicles (NEV) as their primary option by 2030.

According to the survey conducted by Urban Science and The Harris Poll, these buyers are also willing to pay up to a 49% premium for electric vehicles compared to traditional petrol or diesel models.

The survey, which covered 1,000 Indian buyers among other global participants, attributes the positive outlook to the rapid expansion of public EV charging networks and proactive government policies in India.

There are currently over 6,000 charging stations available nationwide, a number expected to rise to over one lakh by 2027.

Despite the favorable conditions, India's EV initiative faces challenges against China's dominant role in producing key EV components and infrastructure.

The survey suggests that collaboration with Chinese companies could significantly accelerate the development of India's EV ecosystem.

Learning from China's extensive experience, such as their city-wide electric bus fleets and expansive charging networks, could help India avoid common pitfalls and expedite its transition to electric mobility.
