Mercedes-Benz announced that its vehicles equipped with the automated DRIVE PILOT system will soon be able to drive autonomously at up to 95 kilometres per hour on German motorways, pending certification by Germany's motor transport authority at the end of 2024. Sales of the system are slated to begin next year.
The DRIVE PILOT system allows the car to take over driving as long as another vehicle is in front and visibility is clear, enabling drivers to take their hands off the wheel, albeit with the expectation that they can take over within seconds if necessary. Existing Mercedes models with the technology will be upgraded from the current limit of 60 kph at no extra cost.
Mercedes-Benz cars will function at level 3 autonomy in Germany under this system, a significant step towards fully autonomous driving. The company aims to increase the system's operational speed to 130 kph and has already tested level 3 in Beijing and received approval to use it on designated highways in California and Nevada. CTO Markus Schaefer expects rapid market expansion in safety-conscious China.
