The Thane civic body is set to implement 'tyre killers' on Ghodbunder Road as a measure to alleviate traffic congestion, an official revealed on Saturday.

Heavy vehicles, especially those exceeding 12.5 tonnes, often disobey restrictions and use this route, causing significant damage to the asphalt, creating potholes, and increasing the level of congestion, the official explained.

To counter this issue, 'tyre killers' will be strategically placed and monitored by CCTV, effectively preventing vehicles from entering the wrong way and helping to reduce accidents. The civic body assures that all necessary information regarding the use of these spike barriers will be communicated to citizens to prevent any untoward incidents.

This decision was made during a meeting at the Thane Municipal Corporation on Friday, attended by civic chief Saurabh Rao, police commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre, and engineers from the Public Works Department.
