The global steel market is currently strained by subdued demand, leading to falling metal prices. However, a report by Shriram Mutual Fund highlights India as an exception. Despite challenges such as recent elections and an ongoing heatwave, domestic steel demand remains robust, defying the global trend.

The report notes that India has seen a significant increase in steel imports, recording a 67% year-on-year rise, predominantly from countries like China, South Korea, and Japan. This surge in imports has contributed to further price declines due to increased supply in the market.

Looking ahead, the report remains positive about India's long-term steel demand, particularly driven by growth in the infrastructure and real estate sectors. These industries are expected to continue expanding, ensuring sustained demand for steel, even as the global outlook remains uncertain.

The report also provides data on the market performance, showing that Nifty Metal Index has shown muted returns in recent months. The index posted a slight negative return over the past month but displayed stronger six-month returns, indicating potential for long-term recovery.

Additionally, the report mentions that the banking sector is experiencing slower growth with rising credit demand putting pressure on banks to increase deposit rates. Banks with strong liability franchises and growing market share are better positioned to handle these challenges, and investors are advised to focus on such institutions.
