The African Development Bank (AfDB) marked its 60th anniversary in Abidjan with vibrant celebrations, combining a reflective look at its achievements over the past six decades with an ambitious vision for Africa's future. The two-day event, held from 9-10 September at the Hotel Ivoire in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, brought together leaders and dignitaries to honor the institution’s contributions to the continent.

Côte d'Ivoire, home to the Bank’s headquarters, played a central role in the festivities, which featured a major photo exhibition tracing the Bank's history since its establishment in 1964. Visitors explored the institution's journey to becoming Africa’s premier multilateral development finance body, earning accolades such as its 'AAA' credit rating.

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, guest of honor, praised the Bank's steadfast support, especially during crises. He highlighted the pivotal infrastructure projects financed by the Bank, improving the lives of millions of Africans. “The Bank is a source of pride and hope for Africa,” he said.

AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina echoed this sentiment, thanking President Ouattara for his support and acknowledging the dedication of Bank staff. Adesina noted that the Bank has backed over 6,575 projects across Africa, with $77 billion invested in the last decade alone. “The Bank's operations have directly impacted 400 million people in Africa over the past eight years,” he added.

The event also included an intergenerational dialogue on inclusive growth and sustainable development, emphasizing solutions for African youth. Ivorian Minister Mamadou Touré urged youth organizations to be more active in shaping the continent's development.

The anniversary concluded with a vibrant cultural performance, setting the tone for the Bank’s next 60 years as it continues its mission to transform Africa.
