Japan's inbound visitor numbers fell below 3 million for the first time in six months, though they continue to signal a record-breaking year, official data revealed on Wednesday.

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported 2.93 million foreign visitors in August, a drop from July's all-time high of 3.29 million. The numbers have surpassed 3 million each month since February, pointing toward a record year, potentially exceeding the 31.9 million visitors in 2019.

Despite the slight dip, the August figures were still 36% higher than those from the same month last year, according to JNTO.
