The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), in collaboration with UNESCO, announced the classification of the International Center for Research and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (ICAIRE) as a Category 2 (C2) center under UNESCO's auspices.

The announcement was made at the third Global AI Summit at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh. This classification highlights Saudi Arabia's significant role in advancing international and regional cooperation in AI policies, ethics, and research. It also reaffirms the Kingdom's commitment to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

This recognition underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to leveraging AI for the betterment of humanity, focusing particularly on developing countries. Since its establishment two years ago, ICAIRE has been involved in various initiatives related to AI research, ethics promotion, policy development, and capacity building.

At the Global AI Summit, ICAIRE held an interactive session with the International Center for Research in AI (IRCAI) and the International Center for AI (AI Movement). The session, attended by representatives from the three UNESCO Category 2 Centers and UNESCO itself, focused on enhancing AI's role in supporting sustainable development, reviewing ethical standards, and discussing UNESCO's efforts in this area. Saudi Arabia had previously endorsed UNESCO's AI ethics recommendations in November 2021.

The classification of ICAIRE as a Category 2 Center followed a Cabinet decision on July 25, 2023, approving its establishment in Riyadh with legal personality and financial and administrative independence.
