Boeing's West Coast factory workers will strike after a decisive 96% vote, disrupting the production of its top-selling jets amid persistent output delays and increasing debt.

The strike, starting at midnight Pacific time, marks the first such action since 2008 and comes shortly after new CEO Kelly Ortberg's appointment in August.

Some 30,000 workers in Seattle and Portland rejected a new contract, pushing instead for a 40% pay rise and other benefits. The IAM union, despite recommending acceptance, saw its members demand more substantial terms.
