On Thursday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde unveiled a NITI Aayog report that aims to elevate the economic activity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to USD 300 billion by 2030, up from the current USD 140 billion.

Opposition leader Aaditya Thackeray questioned the timing of the report, suggesting it could be a step towards turning Mumbai into a Union Territory ahead of the Maharashtra elections.

Released at the state guest house 'Sahyadri' in the presence of Shinde's deputy Devendra Fadnavis and World Economic Forum founder-chairman Klaus Schwab, the report claims the region can achieve significant economic growth and create up to 28 lakh new jobs in less than five years.
