The Delhi government is on the verge of implementing guidelines aimed at transforming Gramin Seva autos into electric vehicles. This move, officials stated, intends to breathe new life into the popular rural transport scheme.

Launched in 2010, Gramin Seva has served as a vital para-transit system, deploying six-passenger three-wheelers in rural areas as well as unauthorized and resettlement colonies of Delhi. Despite being pivotal for last-mile connectivity, the number of operational Gramin Seva vehicles has dwindled from an initial 6,000 to a current range of 2,000 to 3,000.

Union representatives have voiced their concerns in meetings with the Transport Department, stressing the need for revitalizing the service. Chandu Chaurasia, president of the Capital Driver Welfare Association, highlighted that e-rickshaws have encroached upon their business, adding financial strain on Gramin Seva operators. The union is hopeful for subsidies to mitigate the high costs of electric vehicles.
