At least 15 people, including four women and an equal number of children, traveling in a van were killed on Friday when a roadways bus collided with their vehicle from behind on National Highway 93, officials reported.

Thirteen others were injured in the accident and have been admitted to a government hospital.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the incident, directing district officials to reach the spot and take charge of relief measures. The Chief Minister also instructed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured.

According to Superintendent of Police Nipun Agarwal, the accident occurred when the bus tried to overtake the van on the Agra-Aligarh National Highway, near Kanwarpur village, roughly 10 kilometers from the district headquarters.

The passengers were en route to Agra from Hathras. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences and wished for the speedy recovery of those injured, stressing that the local administration is offering all possible assistance under the state government's supervision.

He also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
