In response to the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Beryl, the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has extended a hand of support to the Caribbean nations hit hardest by the disaster. The bank has donated over half a million US dollars to aid disaster relief and rebuilding efforts in the affected regions.

Hurricane Beryl caused significant devastation across several Caribbean islands, with Grenada's Carriacou and Petite Martinique, as well as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' Union Island and Mayreau, being particularly hard-hit. Saint Lucia and Barbados also experienced damage, though to a lesser extent.

Mr. Okechukwu Ihejirika, Acting Chief Operating Officer of Afreximbank’s Caribbean Office, delivered a letter of solidarity to the Prime Ministers of the affected nations on behalf of Afreximbank President and Chairman, Prof. Benedict Oramah.

In his letter, Prof. Oramah emphasized the bank’s commitment to supporting the 11 Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member countries that are part of the Afreximbank under the Partnership Treaty between Afreximbank and CARICOM Member States. He expressed the importance of standing with these nations during such a challenging time.

“The news of the hurricane’s impact has deeply saddened us, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this devastating event. However, the strength and resilience of Caribbean people is well-known; we have no doubt that these qualities will shine through during this difficult period,” Prof. Oramah stated.

Beyond its primary mandate of trade and development, Afreximbank takes a proactive approach in helping countries deal with global climate and health emergencies. This commitment is particularly crucial given the increasing frequency and severity of such disasters in both Africa and the Caribbean.

Afreximbank’s donation is aimed at not only providing immediate relief but also supporting long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts, ensuring that the affected communities can recover and rebuild stronger. The bank’s contribution underscores the importance of international solidarity and support in the face of natural disasters, particularly for vulnerable regions like the Caribbean.
