The National Medical Commission (NMC) has retracted its controversial decision to discontinue all courses offered by the College of Physicians & Surgeons (CPS) in Mumbai. This decision came in compliance with an August 22, 2024, order by the Hon'ble High Court of Judicature at Bombay.
The initial notice, issued on August 16, 2024, had caused widespread consternation within the medical community, igniting debates over the motivations behind the move. CPS, founded in 1912, holds a unique status in Maharashtra's healthcare sector as the only institution of its kind in the region.
The President of CPS Mumbai, Dr. Ajay D. Sambre, expressed relief over NMC's retraction, stating that it vindicated the institution and its alumni. He emphasized CPS's ongoing commitment to high standards of medical education and its readiness to cooperate with the NMC and other medical bodies.
