A small plane that had made an emergency landing on a highway near a North Carolina airport was hit by a vehicle, injuring one of the aircraft's occupants, authorities said.
Greensboro police reported that the single-engine plane experienced a mechanical failure and issued a distress call to Piedmont Triad International Airport around 8 pm Wednesday. The plane landed on westbound Interstate 840 at the junction with Interstate 73. After it stopped, it was struck by a passenger vehicle. One of the two people on board was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was not hurt.
The Greensboro police will investigate the crash, while the National Transportation Safety Board will probe the cause of the airplane malfunction.
