The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution plans to revamp the nearly six-decade-old Sugar (Control) Order, 1966, proposing new regulations to account for technological advancements in the production process.
A newly drafted 'The Sugar (Control) Order, 2024' has been issued, inviting comments from stakeholders by September 23, 2024. The draft details the government's power to regulate sugar production, sale, and storage.
According to the draft, the central and state governments may require licenses for sugar production from sugarcane and its by-products, including ethanol, bio-electricity, and fertilizers. It also outlines the government's authority over price regulation and inspection measures.
