Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet in Chennai has inaugurated a dedicated Department of Rheumatology, featuring specialized clinics for lupus and osteoporosis. This significant expansion underscores the hospital's ongoing commitment to delivering advanced and comprehensive care for conditions that are increasingly affecting patients across India. The department was officially launched by Prof. A V Ramanan, a renowned Rheumatologist from Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath, UK.

Rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and osteoporosis are becoming more prevalent in India, impacting millions. Research indicates that lupus affects approximately 5-10 per 100,000 people in the Indian population, with women being disproportionately affected. Osteoporosis is also a growing concern, particularly among postmenopausal women, with more than 50% at risk. One of the main challenges in managing these autoimmune diseases is the delay in diagnosis. Studies reveal that the average time to diagnose lupus can take over five years from symptom onset due to its complex nature and overlapping symptoms with other conditions. Similarly, osteoporosis often remains undiagnosed until a fracture occurs, highlighting the need for proactive screening and early intervention.

Speaking on the new department, Dr Sham S, Senior Consultant Rheumatologist, stated, 'Our newly launched Department of Rheumatology is designed to provide focused, comprehensive care for patients with autoimmune diseases. In-house laboratory investigations and advanced imaging technologies will facilitate faster diagnosis. With specialized clinics, we aim to reduce diagnostic delays and offer tailored treatment plans that improve patient outcomes and quality of life.' The department is equipped to manage a broad spectrum of rheumatic conditions, from common diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis to rare disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and vasculitis, myositis, and Sjogren's syndrome, ensuring personalized care for each patient.

Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kauvery Group of Hospitals, remarked, 'The launch of our Department of Rheumatology marks a significant advancement in our mission to provide comprehensive and patient-centered care. By integrating specialized clinics, advanced diagnostic tools, and a multidisciplinary approach, we are addressing both immediate and long-term management of complex rheumatic conditions. Our emphasis on early diagnosis, research, and education demonstrates our commitment to improving patient outcomes and advancing healthcare standards.'
