In a landmark achievement, Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra revealed that the income tax department has processed close to 4 crore income tax returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2024-25 within a span of just 15 days.

Malhotra announced that by the deadline of July 31, 2024, over 7.28 crore ITRs were filed, of which about 4.98 crore have already been processed, and intimations sent to taxpayers. Remarkably, 3.92 crore of these were processed in under 15 days.

Speaking at the 165th Income Tax Day celebration, Malhotra highlighted the department's strides in digitisation, attributing the expedited processing to technological advancements. He also noted a significant rise in direct tax revenues over the last decade, increasing from Rs 5.59 lakh crore to Rs 20 lakh crore, and the tax-to-GDP ratio improving to 6 percent from 5.6 percent.
