India's largest LNG storage and regasification facility at Dahej, operated by Petronet LNG, is set for a significant capacity boost. The terminal's capacity will be increased to 22.5 MMTPA from the current 17.5 MMTPA, reinforcing India's strides toward energy self-sufficiency. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the expansion on social media, emphasizing the country's commitment to reducing its dependence on imported natural gas.
In a recent post on X, Minister Puri noted that India currently imports 45 percent of its natural gas, with supplies sourced from international markets through long-term and spot contracts. The majority of these agreements are linked to either crude oil prices from the Middle East or gas prices from the US. Natural gas is essential for India's industries, particularly in fertilizers, refineries, and petrochemicals, underscoring the importance of the Dahej terminal's expansion.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted the ongoing expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam, with plans to triple its refining capacity from 3 million tonnes per year to 9 MMTPA. The project, supported by a budget of Rs 28,026 crore, aims to enhance crude oil processing capacity by 2024. These developments mark significant progress in India's journey towards energy independence.
