Activists Disrupt Leipzig/Halle Airport: Calls for Stricter Security

Climate activists from the group Last Generation interrupted flights at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany, campaigning against fossil fuels. Germany's Leipzig/Halle airport temporarily suspended flights early Thursday after climate activists breached the airfield in a disruptive protest, sparking calls from lawmakers for stricter punishment and enhanced security measures.

The airport stated that air traffic was halted for three hours, particularly impacting freight operations. Flights resumed at 0123 GMT.

Last Generation activists infiltrated the airport around midnight to urge the German government to commit to ending oil, gas, and coal use by 2030. The group announced similar planned disruptions in Europe and North America.

German politicians, reacting to this breach and previous incidents, demanded improved protection for national airports. Last week, actions by the same group caused temporary flight suspensions at two German airports, including Frankfurt.
