Silkyara Tunnel Collapse Investigation: Final Action Based on Expert Committee Recommendations

The final action against contractors and officials responsible for the collapse of the Silkyara tunnel will be determined by expert committee recommendations. A collapse trapped 41 workers, who were later rescued. Financial support has been provided to the workers, and an extensive investigation is underway by a high-powered committee.

The ultimate decision on actions against contractors and officials connected with the collapse of the Silkyara tunnel will rely on recommendations from an expert committee, Parliament was informed on Thursday.

On November 12, 2023, a section of the under-construction tunnel collapsed, trapping 41 workers who were rescued on November 28. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari stated that show cause notices have been issued to the contractor and consultant overseeing the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel's construction by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

Gadkari emphasized that the final actions would be based on the committee of experts' recommendations. This committee, established by the government, has conducted an investigation and submitted a preliminary report on December 22, 2023. Each worker trapped inside the tunnel has received financial support from the contractor, along with financial aid from the Uttarakhand government.
