British Foreign Secretary David Lammy began a pivotal two-day visit to India on Wednesday, aiming to advance negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement and to renew key partnerships in areas such as clean energy, innovative technologies, and national security.
Lammy described the trade deal as a starting point for unlocking shared potential and promoting growth between the two nations. This visit marks the first high-level engagement since Prime Minister Keir Starmer's Labour government took office on July 5.
Lammy's agenda includes discussing climate initiatives and the bilateral "living bridge" that connects the two countries through a substantial Indian diaspora in the UK. His meetings with Indian counterparts, notably External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, are expected to cover a wide range of critical issues, including economic security, global security, and mutual growth.
