A fishing boat, Argos Georgia, carrying 27 people sank off the coast of the Falkland Islands on Tuesday, leaving six dead and seven missing, according to British and Spanish maritime officials.
Fourteen survivors made it onto a life raft and were rescued by nearby fishing boats. Spanish authorities identified 10 Spaniards among the crew. The Falkland Islands received an emergency signal from the Argos Georgia on Monday as it began taking on water east of Stanley, the islands' capital.
Aircraft and vessels have joined the search-and-rescue efforts. The Argos Georgia, managed by Argos Froyanes Ltd, was built in 2018 and operated under the flag of St Helena. This incident recalls the 1982 Falkland Islands war between Britain and Argentina.
