Chad Repatriates 157 Citizens from Libya
Chad has repatriated 157 of its citizens who were detained in Libya, in collaboration with the United Nations' International Organization for Migration and the Libyan government. The move is part of ongoing efforts to bring back detained Chadians. Additional flights and a diaspora conference are planned.
Chad has successfully repatriated 157 of its citizens who had been detained in Libya, according to a statement from its foreign ministry. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the United Nations' International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Libyan state.
The Chadians were flown back to their home country on a special flight. Although the statement did not specify the reasons for their detention, it mentioned that more repatriation flights would be organized in the coming weeks to release and return all remaining detained Chadians in Libya. A 'diaspora conference' is also planned.
This repatriation comes just a week after President Mahamat Idriss Deby participated in an international forum on trans-Mediterranean migration in Libya. Deby, who rose to power following his father's killing by rebels in 2021, was officially sworn in as president in May after a contentious election.
