Indian garment players have immense potential to boost exports to Japan, urged the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) on Sunday. The council is spearheading a delegation to the upcoming India Tex Trend Fair (ITTF) in Tokyo to harness this opportunity.

The fair, running from July 23 for three days, will feature over 200 exhibitors. Prestigious Japanese brands, including Sumitomo Corporation and MUJI, are expected to source their requirements from the diverse array of Indian ready-made garments showcased.

According to AEPC Chairman Sudhir Sekhri, Japan ranks as the fourth largest garment importer globally, presenting a lucrative market for Indian apparel. He highlighted that the Indo-Japan trade agreement provides Indian garments with duty-free access, a competitive edge over Turkish and Chinese products. Currently, India's apparel holds just 1.37% of Japan's $23 billion garment import market, signifying substantial growth potential. The fair aims to capitalize on emerging opportunities, especially given the declining Chinese market share.
