CPI(M) MP John Brittas on Thursday wrote to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, raising concerns about the planned bifurcation of the Palakkad Railway Division to form a new Mangalore Division.
In his letter, Brittas, the Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala, stated that the change would adversely affect the state's railway infrastructure and its socio-economic framework.
Brittas indicated that the proposal appears to be part of a larger conspiracy against Kerala, lacking both economic rationale and administrative necessity. He emphasized that the Palakkad Division is crucial to the Southern Railway network for its strong performance in passenger traffic and revenue generation.
He further highlighted a contradiction with a May 2024 press statement from the Southern Railway, which denied any such plans.
Brittas called on the minister to reconsider the proposal and prioritize the developmental needs of Kerala's railway infrastructure.
