German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz plans to ramp up its electric vehicle (EV) assembly in India. According to senior company officials, this strategy goes beyond cost benefits and aligns with their goals for zero-emission mobility and a carbon-neutral setup.

Currently, Mercedes-Benz India assembles the flagship EQS model at its Chakan plant and is contemplating the localization of other models depending on the market demand. Managing Director & CEO Santosh Iyer emphasized that a holistic approach to zero-emission includes not only tailpipe emissions but also car recyclability and production carbon footprint.

The move is part of Mercedes-Benz's broader ambition to make its vehicles net carbon-neutral across their entire lifecycle by 2039. The company is keen to capitalize on cost advantages and enhance its expertise in EV production as it transitions globally towards sustainable practices.
