The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) has sanctioned a research proposal titled 'Valorization of Dredged Sediments,' with an estimated budget of Rs 46,47,380, according to a statement released by the ministry on Saturday.
The valorization project centers on reusing dredged sediments as raw materials for civil engineering and other applications. This approach offers a sustainable solution to alleviate the burden on natural resources and minimize waste. Implemented over three years, the research will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay).
The initiative aims to transform dredged sediments, typically perceived as waste, into valuable construction aggregates. By doing so, the project contributes to sustainable development and environmental conservation. Following extensive deliberations during the 45th research committee meeting chaired by the Additional Secretary of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, the committee recognized the study's potential benefits and recommended its further consideration. The ministry has now officially approved the proposal based on these recommendations.
'By converting dredged sediments into useful construction aggregates, we can address both environmental concerns and resource utilization efficiently,' said the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. This research initiative marks a significant advancement in sustainable maritime practices by turning dredged sediments into valuable resources.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to fostering research and innovation within the maritime sector. By supporting pioneering projects and collaborating with top academic institutions like IIT Bombay and IIT Madras, the Ministry aims to develop sustainable and efficient solutions for port operations and environmental conservation.
