Government initiatives such as mandatory quality control orders and higher customs duties have significantly boosted toy exports from India. The sector, however, requires further support to fully unleash its potential, top officials stated on Wednesday.

Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Rajesh Kumar Singh highlighted ongoing efforts to extend fiscal incentives under the production-linked incentive scheme for the sector. Despite a token provision in the interim Budget, the scheme aims to attract key investments and modern technology to make Indian manufacturers globally competitive.

Singh remarked that toy exports soared to USD 325.72 million in 2022-23 from USD 96.17 million in 2014-15, underlining the positive impact of government policies. Imports, meanwhile, dipped by 52 per cent during the same period. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to make India a global hub for toy manufacturing, including initiatives such as the National Action Plan for Toys (NAPT) and collaboration with e-commerce platforms like Flipkart to enhance market access and online selling capabilities.
