Local train services on Mumbai's Western Railway network faced significant disruptions on Monday, owing to a technical issue caused by a cable cut at Borivali station, according to officials.
In response to the delay, extra Metro services were promptly operated to accommodate the surge in passengers. Borivali, one of Mumbai's busiest stations, saw significant commuter impact, especially during peak hours.
The malfunction occurred around 2 am, affecting platforms 1 and 2, due to non-operational track changing points. Services continued from platforms 3 to 8. Though four track changing points were restored, efforts were ongoing to fully normalize operations, Western Railway officials reported.
A spokesperson for the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited confirmed the operation of additional Metro services. Normally, 21 train sets run during peak hours, but on Monday, 24 were pressed into service, upon instructions from MMRDA's Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, to manage overcrowding.
Metro Lines 2A and 7, extending between Dahisar and Andheri, experienced significant overcrowding at Borivali, Kurar, and Rashtriya Udyan stations due to the disruption. Currently, four additional train sets have been added to mitigate the situation until further notice.
